UNDERWRITER

Position Summary

Loanhouse is seeking an experienced, technology-driven Mortgage Underwriter to evaluate Non-QM residential mortgage loans and make sound, well-supported credit decisions.

This individual will analyze borrower creditworthiness, income, assets, collateral, loan structure, and supporting documentation to determine compliance with applicable program guidelines and investor requirements. The ideal candidate combines strong credit judgment with a commitment to accuracy, consistency, responsiveness, and responsible innovation.

The Opportunity

At Loanhouse, underwriting is more than reviewing documents against a checklist. Our underwriters are trusted subject-matter experts whose judgment directly influences loan quality, client confidence, and the continued development of our proprietary LOiS technology.

You will help us design an AI-supported underwriting environment that organizes information, compares loan data with supporting documents, identifies inconsistencies, and highlights potential exceptions—allowing underwriters to focus more of their time on credit analysis and informed decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

• Underwrite Non-QM residential mortgage loans in accordance with Loanhouse program guidelines, investor requirements, and applicable laws and regulations.

• Analyze credit reports, income, assets, liabilities, occupancy, loan purpose, collateral, and overall borrower risk.

• Review alternative-income documentation, including bank statements, asset-utilization calculations, profit-and-loss statements, 1099 income, and debt-service coverage ratio documentation.

• Evaluate appraisals, title information, insurance, entity documentation, and other property-related materials.

• Determine whether loans should be approved, suspended, declined, or elevated for an exception or second-level review.

• Issue clear, accurate, and appropriately supported underwriting conditions.

• Review submitted conditions promptly and remove requirements when they have been satisfactorily addressed.

• Identify material inconsistencies, potential misrepresentation, fraud indicators, compliance concerns, and documentation deficiencies.

• Document underwriting conclusions, calculations, exceptions, and decisions clearly within LOiS.

• Communicate effectively with account managers, processors, sales professionals, brokers, and other internal teams.

• Manage assigned pipelines and meet established service-level and turn-time expectations without compromising loan quality.

How You Will Help Us Innovate

• Help define the underwriting rules, calculations, data points, and document relationships that AI should evaluate within LOiS.

• Review AI-generated document extractions, calculations, comparisons, risk indicators, and recommended findings for accuracy and relevance.

• Identify underwriting tasks that can be safely automated while preserving appropriate human judgment and decision-making authority.

• Help develop intelligent quality-control checkpoints that compare electronic loan data with source documentation.

• Recognize patterns in defects, exceptions, and recurring submission issues and recommend system or workflow improvements.

• Provide subject-matter feedback that helps Loanhouse continually improve the accuracy and usefulness of its AI-enabled underwriting tools.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this position means producing accurate, consistent, timely, and defensible underwriting decisions while supporting responsible loan production.

Performance may be measured through underwriting turn times, decision quality, condition accuracy, file completeness, post-closing or quality-control findings, investor suspense rates, repurchase exposure, communication effectiveness, data integrity, and overall loan performance.

Qualifications

• Residential mortgage underwriting experience, with demonstrated authority to make independent credit decisions.

• Strong knowledge of credit, income, asset, collateral, and fraud-risk analysis.

• Non-QM underwriting experience is strongly preferred.

• Experience reviewing alternative-income products, DSCR loans, self-employed borrowers, and complex loan structures is highly desirable.

• Working knowledge of mortgage regulations, investor guidelines, and responsible lending practices.

• Strong mathematical, analytical, organizational, and written communication skills.

• Ability to manage multiple loans and deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

• Comfort working with mortgage technology, automated calculations, document-extraction tools, and AI-assisted workflows.

• Sound judgment, professional skepticism, accountability, and a commitment to making well-supported decisions.
